Collegiate Nationals: ACCC Brings Home Hardware
Collegiate Road Nationals concluded yesterday, and for those of you who haven’t been following the action, the ACCC had a really good weekend!
In Friday’s Road Races, Virginia Tech’s Sean Gardener took 2nd place in Division I while the US Naval Academy’s Ty Mechling and Liberty’s Jake King took 3rd and 4th, respectively, in Division II.
After the men’s strong showings on Friday, the ladies stepped up to the plate on Saturday and brought home two national championships! Wake Forest’s Katherine Shields won the Division II criterium and shortly thereafter Virginia Tech’s Kathryn Buss won the Division I race that also saw UNC-Greensboro’s Emily Shields bring home a medal for fourth place!
And the successes kept on rolling at the time trials on Sunday: In the Division II Men’s TTT, Duke University finished 4th, and in the Division II Women’s TTT, the ladies of the US Naval Academy finished 4th and Duke University rounded out the podium in 5th. In the individual time trial, Virginia Tech’s Michael Reidenbach took home the silver medal for Division I while teammate Kathryn Buss won her second stars-and-stripes jersey! Katherine Shields collected another medal for her 3rd place finish in the Division II time trial.
The ACCC did not disappoint in the team and individual omniums either.
In Division II, the US Naval Academy finished in 4th place and Duke University finished in 5th.
Kathryn Buss finished 2nd in the Women’s Division I individual omnium and Katherine Shields also won silver for the Women’s Division II omnium.
For the Division II Men, Ty Mechling finished 4th in the individual omnium.
All in all, this was a great weekend for the ACCC. We had the second-most awards (17, only one shy of the SECCC’s 18) and the most awards relative to the size of the conference.
Good job, everyone, and many congratulations on a season well-raced. Have a great summer!
